School Name Change Fact Sheet
During the period of validity of a license, no change shall be made in any item for which approval was provided. Changing the name of a school requires prior approval by the Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS).
Corporations: When the same corporation will own the school and the only change being made is to the name of that school, the following items must be submitted:
- An amended Waiver of Consent from the Education Department's Office of Counsel verifying that the Education Department has approved the school's new name. You can write to The Office of Counsel at: NYSED, Office of Counsel, Room 142, Education Building, Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12234, or call them at (518) 474-6400.
- A Certificate of Assumed Name with filing receipt, which shows that the New York State Department of State's Division of Corporations has approved the school's name change. This office is located at 89 Washington Avenue, Room 560 EBA, Albany, New York 12234 and the telephone number is (518) 473-2492. The Certificate of Assumed Name form can be obtained at stores that sell legal forms.
- A Checklist for Completing School Name Change including a current list of active personnel and agent photos.
- Updates of the school catalog, enrollment agreements, and any additional forms to reflect the new school name (2 copies).
Sole Proprietorship or Partnership: When the same proprietorship/partnership will own the school and the only change being made is to the name of the school, the following items must be submitted:
- An amended Business Certificate/Partnership Agreement, issued by the County Clerk from the county in which the school is located.
- A Checklist for Completing School Name Change including a current list of active personnel and agent photos.
- Updates of the school catalog, enrollment agreements, and any additional forms to reflect the new school name (2 copies).
After the name change is processed, an amended school license, personnel licenses, and curriculum approvals will be generated for the school.
