English as a Second Language | BEST Literacy |
- Unlike the BEST Plus test, which is a test of English speaking and listening ability, the BEST Literacy is a test of English reading and writing ability.
- Beginning July 1, 2008, agencies have the option of using the BEST Literacy to assess only students who have exited ESL level 6 by scoring above 540 on the BEST Plus or who score above 540 at intake. The BEST Literacy cannot be used alone. Students who score on NRS level 6 on the BEST Literacy should be transferred to ABE and tested with the TABE.
For complete information on NYSED assessment policies and procedures, please refer to Chapter 4: Assessment Practices of the New York State NRS Manual at NYSED Adult Education's Accountability webpage.
The BEST Literacy test is available from the Center for Applied Linguistics.
