Literacy Zones & Family Welcome Centers!
The Family Welcome Centers provide services which connect adult participants and their families to Pathways Out of Poverty. The Pathways Out of Poverty are tailored to the needs of individuals and families. The purpose of Literacy Zones (LZ) is to close the achievement gap in urban and rural communities of concentrated poverty and high concentrations of families and individuals with limited literacy or English language proficiency. Literacy Zones provide a systemic approach to meeting the literacy needs of these communities from birth through adult. The Literacy Zone is geographically defined as one or more adjacent census tracts using the US Census data.
Services Provided by Literacy Zones:
- Case Management for out-of-school youth and adults to pursue a NYSED HSE diploma, ELA and or postsecondary education, training, and employment
- Internet connected computer lab with literacy instruction to teach use of computers and prepare participants to take assessments leading to an HSE diploma
- Resource library of culturally sensitive materials and access to technology
- Case Management referral services to other educational programs for adult/child disability concerns
- Case Management and referrals to Career Center and workforce partners including workforce training, Virtual Career Center, and apprenticeship programs
- Annual career fair within the zone
- Family Welcome Centers within each Literacy Zone that provide resources for the entire family
The Adult Education Programs and Policy (AEPP) office currently funds 67 Literacy Zones in New York State
